Part two of the portmanteau project continues the exercise of synthesizing two forms into one. A given theater and dormitories are synthesized into one architectural form. The project begins with a singular loop of dorms enclosing a courtyard space for gathering, around which interesting program combinations can be formed.

The design considers the two parts with different characteristics: the loop of dorms sits on the ground as an idle figure, and the insertion of a theater creates potential to manipulate the form of the loop. As public program is inserted into the site, the loop is lifted and pushed, providing a corner entrance to the courtyard.

The theater provides a source of bifurcation that completes the original figure of the loop, as well as a source of conceptual duality. While the concept of a school of theater is to have students performing in front of an audience, the final form of this school creates a spectacle of the audience. The final sloping form is gestural towards the point of public entry. In a colliseum-like configuration the private sphere is elevated above and encircling the public gathering space, thus creating a condition where public gathering becomes an act watched by students.
